Within Scenes of Hurt was created from snippets of audio taken from movies which display humans in various states of nonverbal emotional expression. Sounds from actors portraying extreme turmoil were stretched, frozen, and examined from every angle, then utilized in the work for their natural musical expressiveness. Instead of discarding material recorded with poor microphone placement or containing incidental background noises, the composition presents sounds ‘as is’ and incorporates their nuances into the compositional framework. This piece demonstrates one approach towards understanding connections between our innate reaction to the human voice and musical expression.
